County Passes Living Wage!
Thank County
Commissioners Who Voted For It

By a vote of 7 - 5 (and one recusal), the Shelby
County Commission passed our living wage ordinance for County workers
and workers on County contracts.
In a separate action, the County
Commission has also implemented new requirements for their PILOT property tax freeze program, which requires employers receiving PILOTs to pay $10 per hour and health insurance benefits for all new jobs that were created in order to receive the tax freeze.
The vote was very close, and it was clear that the presence of 100
living wage supporters, as well as the hundreds of letters and phone
calls that we made this spring, had an impact.
The county living wage ordinance differs from the city
ordinance in two ways, one which is positive and one which is negative.
The positive change is that the county ordinance ties the living wage
level to the federal poverty level, so that workers will receive a cost
of living increase each year on July 1st. The negative change is that
county contractors that have 10 or less employees are exempted from the
living wage ordinance. This amendment was needed in order to keep the
living wage ordinance from failing to pass altogether.
