Landmark Study Finds that 2 in 3 Low-Wage Workers
  Experience Wage Theft

The growing fight against wage theft has sometimes been hampered by the lack of in-depth
data to document just how serious the crisis is. A new landmark study by the National Employment
Law Project and other organizations remedies this problem. Broken Laws, Unprotected Workers
surveyed more than 4,000 low-wage workers in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

The levels of wage theft they found were shocking, and point to the need to immediate action
by local, state, and federal government to stop by the crime of wage theft.

Key Findings of Broken Laws, Unprotected Workers:
  - More than 2 in 3 workers (68 percent) had experienced a wage violation in the previous work week.

  - One in four workers (26 percent) were paid less than the legal minimum wage. Sixty percent of those
who were paid below minimum wage were underpaid by more than $1 per hour.

   - Seventy percent of workers who had come in early or stayed late during a shift were not paid for
    their extra work hours.

  - Seventy-six percent of workers who worked more than 40 hours in the previous week were not
paid the legally required overtime by their employers.
