A volunteer opportunity for your congregation
Day laborers
in Memphis face many challenges: performing work for which they
may not be paid;
laboring in dangerous working
conditions without adequate safety training; and
working in the hot Memphis sun without proper
hydration.
Workers
Interfaith Network invites you to
support the rights of day laborers by
gathering a small group (5 - 10 people) from
your congregation to participate in
Water is Sacred, Work is Sacred.
What happens during a Water is
Sacred,
Work is Sacred session?
- Your group meets either at your
congregation
or the WIN office at 7:30 on a weekday
morning to prepare for a visit to a day labor
corner on Jackson Ave.
-
With WIN staff, your groups visits the day labor
corner to pass out water
bottles labeled with WIN's contact information, and pocket
sized
worker rights booklets. WIN staff lead a short talk
with day laborers about their working conditions.
- Your group returns
to your congregation to reflect on the experience at the site,
as well as discuss a scripture from your faith tradition that relates to what
you've
learned. Usually groups wrap up between 10:00 -
10:30 a.m.
