José informed his supervisor three times that his forklift was not working properly and had almost caused accidents. In December 2008, he had an accident with the forklift that shattered his ankle. 

“This accident didn’t just hurt me; it also changed the lives of my family. I’ve been classified disabled for life because my employer didn’t listen to me,” José  said. He added that the warehouse he worked in had OSHA safety posters up in many places, but did little to actually keep workers safe.

Sharing Life-Saving Information with Workers

The fatality rate for Latino construction workers is 44 percent higher than it is for all construction workers. WIN's "More Than Training" safety program is giving construction workers life-saving skills in their native language.  

This weekend program uses standards for training set by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. But “More than Training” is unique because it also draws on workers' experiences to help them learn from each other. Two of WIN's worker leaders help a safety expert lead the trainings. Shorter safety trainings are also offered each week at WIN’s Workers’ Center meeting. 

Offering Trainings for Employers

Workers Interfaith Network is also available to offer safety trainings to employers, especially those with Spanish-speaking workers.
